Spiders are not insects. Spiders have eight legs and two body parts, the abdomen and the thorax.  Insects have three body parts and six legs.

There are more than 30,000 species of spiders that are known.

Some spiders hang from slender threads, and walk delicately upon their webs.

Not all spiders spin webs.

Did you know that Spiders, being delicate creatures, if they fall, they can die.

Spiders have been on the planet for around 350,00 years.

Spiders eat more insects than birds and bats (combined) eat, so they should be considered another of human's best friends. They play a big role in controlling insect populations.

Spiders eat many types of harmful insects, helping to keep your garden free of pests.

Spiders spend most of their lives searching for food.  They are very helpful to humans, too.  They are helpful because they eat things that are annoying and sometimes harmful to humans.

Most spiders eat insects, but they can also eat other spiders.

Webs get dirty and torn, so lots of spiders make a new one every day.  They don't waste the old one, though--they roll it up into a ball and eat it!

Baby spiders are colorless.

Young spiders resemble adults. Only their size and coloration differ.

Male spiders are usually smaller than female spiders.

Most female spiders live a year or two. Most male spiders live 4-5 months.

Spiders come in a variety of brilliant colors.  This allows them to adapt and blend in to their environment.  Insects have a hard time seeing the spiders.

Enemies of spiders are: humans, weather, frogs, toads, lizards, birds, shrews, hunting beetles, ants, centipedes, parasitic flies, wasps, fungus and other spiders.
