Most of the people I know don’t like spiders and even go so far as to stamp out their life. I have to admit, that as a child I did not like them much, but I think that was out of some unknown fear. As I have gotten a bit older and logical about life, I can see that they do some great work as bug exterminators and the beautiful way they design their webs.
I love the many spiders that live in my yard. Do you know on average there are approximately one million spiders per acre of land? So that means I have about, 250,000 of them in my yard. As I walk through my yard, waving my hand in front of me to break the webs that remain from yesterday; I wonder if my neighbors think I am crazy constantly waving at the air. They do not see the webs from afar. Nor do they understand that I want to keep the spiders that I have in my yard? The spiders provide control of the other insects and become a nice meal for the birds.
When I truly get to watch a spider in action, moving through its web or catching some insect, I marvel at their movement. Even more, I admire how patient they are waiting for the next meal and the perseverance of their web making. Do they know really how short their life truly will be?
While I have never seen all the colors I use for my bead spiders on most spiders in nature. I think it would be fantastic if that was the case. Maybe spiders would be loved more if they came in all these colors. Well, loved may be too strong of a word, but liked or at least better tolerated. As you can see, I use a wide variety of colors and shapes not found in nature when creating my bead spiders. My hope is that this helps them become loved more. Okay tolerated at least.
When I create a new spider I think about the type of beads and colors to I want to use, my mind wanders to what I think would be fun to see in nature. Most of the beads that I am using for my spiders are recycled or re-used from old jewelry that has been previously loved and enjoyed. So I choose complimentary colors for each body and head beads; combining them in a way that ensures they continue to be loved and enjoyed by you.
My friends have said that I should make other insects, but I really love creating spiders. It is almost as if they have just hatched. As the wind blows, they fly away not knowing where the wind is taking them; yet are ready for whatever their short life has in store. They make me feel as wonderful as when I see the spiders in my yard.
No other insect (most are just pests) gives me that same feeling. Yes, Butterflies, Dragonflies, Ladybugs, and such are wonderful too, but folks don’t go around their yards and homes killing them off. I am working on changing the world’s opinion of spiders by creating one, wonderfully one of a kind, spider at a time.
